BHS Hall of Fame Class to be inducted Oct. 3

Burnsville High School will honor five outstanding graduates and one former staff member when it inducts its Hall of Fame Class of 2025 in October.  

The newest Hall of Fame class will be inducted at a free public ceremony on Friday, Oct. 3, in the school’s Mraz Center for Performing Arts. A reception will take place at 5:30 p.m. followed by a program at 6:30 p.m.

The Hall of Fame Committee has selected the following for induction this year: 

  • Doug Boe, longtime Burnsville High School coach and teacher
  • Michael Hunter, class of 1994, standout athlete and community volunteer
  • Tom Nguyen, class of 1995, artist
  • Mark Tuszynski, class of 1975, medical researcher
  • Mike Wicker, class of 1973, professor and community builder
  • Cedric Yarbrough, class of 1991, actor 

The BHS Hall of Fame was established in 2006 as part of the school's 50th anniversary celebration. It is a way to recognize those who have made exceptional achievements in their field, significant contributions to Burnsville High School and unique contributions to their community on a local, state, national or international level. Inductee Profiles

Doug Boe was a longtime teacher and coach at Burnsville High School, leading football, boys and girls basketball, boys golf and girls badminton over the course of 34 years. As coach or assistant coach, Boe helped 9 teams win state championships. He was the first coach in Minnesota to lead teams to the state championship game in both boys and girls basketball, and was elected into the Minnesota Girls Basketball hall of Fame in 2015. Boe was known for instilling in his students and athletes the importance of teamwork, mental toughness and self belief. 

Michael Hunter, Class of 1994, was an outstanding athletes during his years at Burnsville High School. He was a member of the 1991 state champion football team, was named to all-conference and all-state honorable mention teams, and selected as a member of the Minnesota All-Star Football team his senior year. Hunter is now a leader and volunteer for local youth sports, coaching with the Burnsville Athletic Club (BAC) for more than 20 years, serving as commissioner for the BAC Youth Football, and as assistant coach for the BHS football team. For his community service, Hunter has been honored with the Burnsville Community Builder Award and the RBA Consulting President Club Award. 

Tom Nguyen, Class of 1995, is an award-winning professional artist especially renowned for his work in comic illustrations. His work has appeared in D.C. Comics publications including The Man of Steel, Batman, Green Lantern, Justice League and Catwoman. He also provides concept and onscreen artwork for various television shows, including CBS’s Big Brother. He has authored two books on the art of comic drawing and co-published the character comic book The Switch. Nguyen is a three-time Frank Frazetta Award recipient and two-time recipient of the Comic Books for Kids Award for his support of children in hospitals and cancer centers acros the country.

Mark Tuszynski, Class of 1975, is a groundbreaking neuroscientist and researcher. In 2001, he performed the first human clinical trial of gene therapy to treat Alzheimer’s in the adult human brain. Currently working at the University of California San Diego, he continues to develop gene therapy treatments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's diseases. He has authored more than 180 scientific and medical publications and holds more than 20 patents, including a bioengineered device to repair injured peripheral nerves that is now in clinical testing across the United States. Tuszynski has won several awards for his research, including Ariens Kappers Medal, Jacoby Award from the American Neurological Association and the Reeve-Irvine Medal. 

Mike Wicker, Class of 1973, is an engineer, educator and missionary who has spent decades developing leaders around the world. He holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota, a master’s in Community & Regional Planning and a Ph.D. in organizational Learning and educational Leadership from the University of New Mexico. He is a board member of the International Leadership Foundation, Africa Forum on Religion and Government, International Leadership University and the African Center for Christian Leadership and Development.  

Cedric Yarbrough, Class of 1991, is a well-known voice and screen actor. He has starred in several highly acclaimed series, including Speechless, The Goldbergs  and his most widely recognized role as Deputy S. Jones in the Emmy-nominated comedy Reno 911. Yarbrough’s work includes providing the voices for Tom Dubois and Colonel H. Stinkmeaner in The Boondocks, as well as voices in Batman: Caped Crusader, Family Guy, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Bojack Horseman. Yarbrough has worked with titans of comedy such as Steve Carrell in Get Smart and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler in The House, and also dramatic legend Clint Eastwood in the critically acclaimed Juror #2.
