BHS students earn awards at regional, state science fairs

Ten Burnsville High School students qualified for the state science fair after presenting their research papers and projects at the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair (TCRSF) in early March, and two went on to win awards at the state competition.

Junior Sarah Zamudio earned two awards at the state competition - a $500 Land O’Lakes Food Innovation Award and the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award - for her project “Composting Inputs and Outputs.” Sophomore Olivia Hamann won third place in the Minnesota Environmental Health Association Award for Excellence in Environmental Health Science for her project “I Didn’t Start the Fire.”

Paper Competition

Fifty-seven BHS students participated in the paper competition of the TCRSF, with 6 qualifying for the state competition. State qualifiers were Lexi Bruesehoff, Greta Griffen, Olivia Hamann, Ryan Kennedy, Feven Tesfaye and Parvina Yusupova. 

Project Competition

Twenty-eight BHS students participated in the backboard competition, with six advancing to the state competition. State qualifiers were Vanlyda Bun, Efrata Eshete, Olivia Hamann, Ella O’Hanlon, Feven Tesfaye and Sarah Zamudio. 

The following students won awards at the TCRSF project competition.

  • Jordan Flores - Stockholm International Water Prize
  • Olivia Hamann - NASA Earth System Science Award
  • Lillie Hanto - Society for In Vitro Biology Award, Stockholm International Water Prize
  • Neela Jospehs - American Psychological Association Award
  • Ella O’Hanlon - Society for In Vitro Biology Award
  • Fatima Said - Stockholm International Water Prize
  • Jennifer Saidu - Stockholm International Water Prize
  • Parvina Yusupova - American Psychological Association Award
  • Sarah Zamudio - Association of Women Geoscientists Award, Office of Naval Research Award, Inspiring Excellence Award, US Agency for International Development Award

In addition, BHS science teacher and longtime Science Fair adviser Mike Huemoeller was presented with the “Inspiring Excellence Teacher Award” which is given for excellence in science mentoring of students.
