Burnsville High School senior’s Eagle Scout project leaves a lasting legacy for the Harriet Bishop community

Henry Meyers, Harriet Bishop Elementary alum and member of Troop 471 - Scouts BSA, recently completed his Eagle Scout Project. For his project, he led the installation of natural fencing, consisting of fourteen dogwood plants, at Harriet Bishop’s outdoor classroom. The fencing is a sustainable, environmentally-friendly addition to the school that not only enhances the space but creates a natural barrier that positively impacts student learning.

Henry directed the project from start to finish, including planning and carrying out all aspects of the planting, leading a team of volunteers and ensuring the space was completed on budget and on time, as outlined in his presentation to the Harriet Bishop PTO.

“The impact of Henry’s project extends far beyond the physical improvements to our campus,” said Harriet Bishop Principal Ken Essay. “He modeled leadership, teamwork and perseverance for our students—qualities that align beautifully with the values of Scouting and with the kind of role model we hope our children will look up to.

The seven ranks for Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts) are Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and finally, the Eagle Scout rank. Advancing through these ranks requires completing specific requirements, earning merit badges, and demonstrating skills and leadership.

Henry, who’s been involved in Scouting since he was 5-years-old, chose this project as a way to give back to his community and improve the space for the generations to come. While he initially joined Scouting because it seemed really fun, it’s the sense of community and belonging he feels that have kept him a part of the group.

“I hope that students enjoy the space, being surrounded by nature, and that it’s a relaxing, calm place that reduces distractions,” said Henry.

Outside of Scouting and the multiple service projects he’s been a part of, Henry has been involved in athletics, including cross country and track.

Henry is undecided about his post-high school plans but is thinking about going into the trades.
