Nine BHS students signed letters of intent to pursue a teaching career

Nine seniors who plan to become teachers took part in a signing ceremony on May 20 at Burnsville High School.

The ceremony, similar to those where high school senior athletes sign letters of intent regarding where they will play college sports, honors students who are committed to pursuing a teaching career.

Teachers Matt Deutsch and Andrea Parent, advisors of the Future Teachers of America (FTA) club, were on hand to welcome parents, staff and students to the event.

Superintendent Dr. Latanya Daniels also spoke at the ceremony, providing encouragement to students and instructing them to lean on the Burnsville community for support as they navigate their journey in the education field.

This year’s future teacher signees include:

  • Liliyana Coronel — Normandale Community College, Bloomington
  • Greta Dickhausen — University of Wisconsin-River Falls
  • Anggelo Mendoza Fiero — Metro State University, St. Paul
  • Jon Davie Maravillas — Undecided
  • Nyamach Pidor — Augsburg University, St. Paul
  • Evelyn Maldonado Portillo — Augsburg University, St. Paul
  • Karen Hernandez Rodriguez — Augsburg University, St. Paul
  • Jessie Romero Rosa — Winona State University, Winona
  • Olivia Schroers — Augsburg University, St. Paul

Through a partnership with Metropolitan State University, the Education Pathway at Burnsville High School helps jumpstart students’ journey into the education field. Seniors can take two education courses and earn six college credits without leaving Burnsville High School.

The approach aligns with District 191’s Pathways model, which helps students think about and prepare for their futures by providing real-world opportunities right in the school, many of which lead to professional certifications or college credit.
