'Showcase' musical revue returns to the stage in May
The longtime, fully staged musical revue, Showcase, is returning to Burnsville High School (BHS) with combined performances of four incredible BHS arts programs – choir, theatre, jazz band and dance.
Showcase will feature a dazzling lineup of song and dance, from "Hamilton" and Prince to Tina Turner and Barbie (plus Ken!). Other numbers will be drawn from the musicals "Encanto," "In the Heights," "Mean Girls the Musical," "Spring Awakening," "Hairspray," "Wicked," and artists including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Noah Kahan and Diana Ross.
The production of vocal solos, ensembles, full chorus numbers, dance and jazz is built around this year’s Showcase theme, “Know Your Worth.” The theme highlights the principles of history, heritage, pride, purpose, and community. The concept was developed by Drew Edwards of Minneapolis, who has generously partnered with the school for the production. Edwards is the founder of OurProudLegacy.Com and Know Your Worth Clothing, which are based on the understanding of the value and worth derived from knowing your community’s history.
Director and vocal coach Emily Najjar-Field selected songs that told stories or had themes aligned with one or more of the principles and are relevant to people of all ages in a diverse community. “In rehearsals we often pause to give context before learning a new song so the performers understand the connection to the theme and how we can all relate,” she says.
Because of the pandemic, the most recent Showcase was in 2018.
All Showcase performances are at the Mraz Center for the Performing Arts at Burnsville High School. A free preview for senior citizens is set for Wednesday, May 8, at 4 p.m. Ticketed performances are May 9-11 and May 17-18 at 7 p.m. and a matinee performance on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m.
