Eight Burnsville High School students advanced to the state science fair and two qualified as alternates for the international competition after presenting their research at the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair Feb. 27 in St. Paul.

Sloane Dunn and Sabrina Abdi both advanced to state and plan to attend the international competition in May in Phoenix. Dunn’s project was on vaccine hesitancy and Measles outbreaks and Abdi’s was on evaluating the effectiveness of different methods of water filtration. Layla Nguyen advanced to state with her project about first name stereotypes. Cole Hagemann qualified for state for his project on artificial intelligence and math.

Charley Mitchell and Tesah Evans each earned nods as state alternates.

Dunn, Abdi, Nguyen, Robert Lee, Tuan-Hy Dinh, Sammy Porta and Joel Saidu all submitted scientific papers that advanced to state. The state science fair is March 27 in St. Paul.

"Burnsville had a very successful science fair this year. Having a single student qualify for international competition is impressive and we had two students qualify this year. In addition, many students won special awards and several advanced to state competition,” BHS science teacher Mike Huemoeller said. ”I'm very proud of the students' hard work and impressed by their science skills and hard work. Science fair is a rigorous competition which allows students to investigate real world science problems and conduct statistical analysis on data to form logical conclusions. It is these exact skills which are so valued by colleges and businesses."

Fifth-six Burnsville High School students submitted papers and 26 presented their projects at the science fair. In all, 47 schools participated in the event and 356 projects were submitted.
